Dotted throughout this region are hundreds of lakes. You can spot these little cabins all over.

Fall. That time of year that normally everyone loves. I do too in normal years. Part of my work as a photographer allows me the opportunity to see special places at special times of the year. Last year I was part of a campaign for Destination Ontario and Ontario Highlands. It’s known as tourism region 11. We traveled for a few days through Renfrew and Lanark Counties. We rode bikes, enjoyed time on a boat, enjoyed windy roads lined with trees on the brink of fall blooms. The Ontario Highlands is made up of five counties. They stretch from Smith Falls in the south, Deep River in the north east and Haliburton in the west. Each region has its own unique features. For this particular trip we explored through Haliburton and Lanark counties.

The windy roads of fall you can look forward to traveling on.

Hues of the forest floor as the leaves hit the ground.

That special line between leafy shorelines and water that is cooling down.

The rivers are a sight to be seen. They can be fished in and paddled on. They are there to be explored.

LeBoat Canal Boat Vacations are based in Smith Falls, ON. You can rent various size vessels for up to 12 people.

LeBoat is based in Smith Falls. If traveling the Rideau Canal system by boat interests you, you can find more information on them here. The experience is unique in North America.

LeBoat vessels use the Parks Canada locks on the Rideau Canal to traverse the canal system.

The beauty of the canal is all the small towns to visit and experience.

LeBoat vessels sail across Rideau Lake as part of the Rideau Canal system.

Spread throughout the Ontario Highlands are provincial parks, including the famous Bon Echo Provincial Park.

The lake at Bon Echo gets you close to the famous cliffs of Bon Echo Provincial Park.

It’s tricky business getting the best views and the best colors. Come to early, and you will be disappointed. Come to late and they will be past. It’s the fun of annually trying to make the right timing call.

Just a roadside view of the colors and water. Pretty much any road you drive in the highlands will give you colors like these.

The falls of Almonte, ON sits on the border of the Ontario Highlands and the Ottawa region.

This view! 45 minutes down some beautiful backroads from Almonte, ON is Blueberry Mountain.

If hiking in Lanark County is the adventure you’re looking for, you can find the information on the trail here.
